Title: Travel across Kedarnath to Badrinath in a day: Chasing the Myth
Speaker: Abhiruk Lahiri is a PhD candidate in the Department of Computer Science and Automation, Indian Institute Science. Along with his formal education, he takes photographs and document places and culture. Apart from that, he is a frequent visitor to different valleys of Himalaya.
Abstract: A belief handed down from generations--that a priest used to commute daily between Badrinath and Kedarnath, has created enough interest among eminent explorers of the like of Charles Meade, Eric Shipton, Bill Tilman and Martin Moran to set their foot in this route discovery. Two great Hindu shrines over the mountains of the Chaukhamba range are separated by behemoth peaks like Neelkanth, Parvati, Chaukhambha and an icefield called Panpatia below them. Drifts of moraines, crevasses and massive icefalls along with bad weather kept away everybody from a successful crossing. Even though in 1934, Shipton and Tillman could somehow cross the Panpatia icefield, after negotiating series of icefalls and a dense bamboo forest, a repeat of the same route had not been attempted until 1998. But a route across it exists, that we know from the many reports submitted by the mountaineers, finally crossed by a team from West Bengal in 2007. In last May, a couple of students from this institute along with their friends successfully repeated that route. In this talk, one of the trekkers from that duo will share their experience.
